Mole Removal
Safely and effectively remove unwanted moles for a smoother, more confident appearance.
Safe Removal for Unwanted or Irritated Moles
Moles can be flat, raised, dark, light, small, large, smooth, or uneven. Some are harmless but bothersome because of where they are located. Others become irritated from shaving, clothing, jewelry, or daily movement.
If a mole bothers you, removal may be an option. Dr. Frederick Weniger will evaluate the mole’s size, depth, location, appearance, and symptoms before recommending the safest approach.

Cosmetic Mole Removal vs. Medical Evaluation
Not every mole should be treated the same way. A mole removed for appearance is different from a mole that has changed, grown, bled, become painful, or developed irregular features.
This distinction matters. If a mole looks suspicious, it may need to be removed in a way that allows it to be sent for lab evaluation. The goal is to choose the right method, not just the fastest method.
When a Mole Should Be Checked
You should have a mole checked if it changes in size, shape, color, or texture. Other warning signs include bleeding, itching, pain, irregular borders, multiple colors, rapid growth, or a mole that looks different from the others on your skin.
The ABCDE warning signs are also helpful. These include asymmetry, border irregularity, color variation, diameter larger than 6 millimeters, and evolving appearance over time.
If you are unsure whether a mole is simply unwanted or medically concerning, it is better to have it evaluated first.

Mole Removal Options
The best removal method depends on the mole. Some moles can be treated with shave removal. Others need surgical excision. Select superficial benign spots may be considered for laser treatment, but laser is not the right choice when a mole needs pathology.
Surgical excision removes the mole more completely and may be recommended for deeper moles or moles that need lab review. Shave removal may be used for certain raised moles that sit closer to the surface. Dr. Weniger will explain which option fits your situation.

What to Expect During the Procedure
Before removal, the mole is examined and the treatment area is cleaned. Local anesthesia is used to help keep the area numb during the procedure.
The mole is then removed using the method discussed during your consultation. Depending on the technique, the area may be closed with sutures or covered with a dressing. If lab evaluation is needed, the tissue is sent for pathology.
Recovery After Mole Removal
Recovery is usually simple. Many patients return to normal daily activities within 24 to 48 hours, depending on the size, location, and removal method.
You will receive instructions for keeping the area clean, changing dressings if needed, applying any recommended ointment, and avoiding irritation while the skin heals. If sutures are used, you may need a follow-up visit for removal.

Scarring After Mole Removal
Any mole removal can leave a mark. The final scar depends on the mole’s size, depth, location, your skin type, and how your body heals.
Careful technique can help reduce visible scarring, but aftercare also matters. Protecting the area from sun exposure is especially important because UV exposure can darken healing skin and make a scar more noticeable.
Follow-Up and Skin Monitoring
If the mole is sent for pathology, the office will review the results with you when they are available. If additional care is needed, Dr. Weniger will explain the next step.
Patients with changing moles, atypical moles, a history of skin cancer, or multiple concerning spots may also need regular skin checks with a dermatologist or appropriate medical provider. Removing one mole does not replace ongoing skin monitoring.
