Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)

Arm Lift VideosBrachioplasty is typically performed to remove excess skin from the under portion of the arms resulting from significant and rapid weight loss. This method of body contouring may also be necessary for correcting aesthetic issues that result from the use of liposuction as the sole form of fat treatment. This process is used to reshape the upper arms, from the elbow to the underarm area.

In order to be a good candidate for brachioplasty an individual must be in good overall health, with no major medical issues, including any forms of chronic illness that are likely to impact both healing and the efficacy of the surgery itself. Patients should also have sufficient arm fat and excess arm skin to justify the procedure and to make removal both possible and safe. While most individuals who opt to receive an arm lift are people who have experienced substantial weight loss and who have stabilized their weight, this procedure is also a viable cosmetic option for individuals of normal weight with excess hanging skin and disproportionate deposits of fat in the upper arm area.

Brachioplasty improves the contours of the upper arm area with incisions typically placed in the inner arm region. The smoother, tighter contours that result from any body lift procedure are apparent almost immediately, although initially obscured by some swelling and brusing. Skin quality is dramatically improved both in appearance and feel. Although permanent, the resulting incision lines are generally placed within the natural body contours.

The nature of any cosmetic procedure will vary depending upon the needs of the patient. For those who have minimal skin sagging issues in the arms but possess significant extra fat, the strategic application of liposuction procedures is likely to suffice in correcting the cosmetic issues. For those with moderate amounts of excess skin located near the upper arm and underarm region, the skin removal process can be neatly conducted through an armpit incision, producing minimal scarring and requiring a minimal amount of time for recovery. More extensive skin removal, such as for patients with dramatic weight loss, will need to be performed over a larger area of the arm and although scarring can be minimized through innovations in surgical technique, evidence of scarring is likely to be apparent from the elbow to the underarm and possibly across some portion of the chest.
