Smaller Breast Implants Are the New Trend
Breast surgery has a long history in the world of plastic surgery and continues to be one of the most popular choices for cosmetic surgery among women. In the 1990s and early 2000s, breast augmentations were the preferred choice for breast surgery; in the past several years, however, breast reductions have slowly gained ground. Women are opting for smaller breasts to relieve discomfort and self-consciousness that often come with overly large breasts.
Problems for Adolescent Girls
For many women, larger breasts are a physical and emotional complication. Larger breasts mean heavier breasts, which make the front of the body especially top heavy, causing back pain and fatigue. This is especially true for women who aren’t well-proportioned. Women with larger breasts also have trouble finding clothes and lingerie that fit properly without limiting themselves to overly large T-shirts and sports bras.
Breasts can be reduced naturally with a healthy lifestyle, but that doesn’t always work. Exercise tends to become more problematic for women with larger breasts because they hurt and get in the way of movement. Another issue with larger breasts is that they can make you look heavier than you really are, even if you are a pretty healthy and active person. Breast tissue is also affected by changes in your hormones, weight fluctuations, and pregnancy.
For girls who start to grow larger breasts than their peers during puberty, their breasts can make them a target for bullying, name-calling, and harassment. The blows to their self-confidence and the negative body images can follow girls well into adulthood.
How a Reduction Helps
By making your breasts smaller and more proportional with your body size, a surgeon can improve or eliminate the problems that come with having larger breasts. The procedure takes about 3-5 hours and is done under general anesthesia. Once you’re asleep, the surgeon makes incisions around your areola and down the underside of your breast. This allows him access to the soft tissue so that he can remove any extra fatty deposits and breast tissue. The areola is usually repositioned so that it is higher and a little smaller than before. The surgeon will also usually need to lift your breasts so that they sit higher on your torso.
Once your breasts are in the correct position and are the appropriate size and shape, the surgeon closes the incisions with sutures that are placed within the breast tissue. This gives your breasts some additional support and protection while they heal internally.
The result is a pair of breasts that are smaller, firmer, and proportional to your body shape. Once you have recovered from the procedure, you’ll be able to enjoy wearing the clothes you like and being as active as you want without worry about how your breasts look or feel.
