How to Keep Your Expectations Realistic for Your Breast Augmentation
These days it seems like everyone knows someone who has had plastic surgery and you know what? That’s pretty accurate! What was once only affordable to the rich and famous is now something that you find on soccer moms. Plastic surgery has become very common over the past decade among both genders.
For women, the most common surgery is breast augmentation. Last year there were over 286,000 patients alone! You or someone you know is probably considering breast surgery right now. One issue that tends to come up during a breast surgery consultation is establishing realistic expectations for the final results. A lot of patients come into the doctor’s office with their new cup size already decided and know exactly how they want their new breasts to look. The reality is that what the patient wants may not always be the best option.
Cup Size and Implant Size Don’t Go Hand-in-Hand
If you have ever been bra shopping, you know that you don’t always fit in the same size across brands. Sometimes you have to go up a band size in one brand or go down a cup size in a different one, which are also known as your “sister cup sizes”. That’s because bras fit differently on different people; one brand size doesn’t fit the same way on every person. The same is true for implant sizes. Two patients with the same size implants could end up wearing very different bra sizes.
It’s perfectly fine for you to go in to your consultation knowing what kind of cup size you’d like for your new breasts – on average, patients wish to increase their breasts by two cup sizes. However, you should avoid going in with a decided implant size. Implant size is determined by volume and doesn’t correspond exactly with bra cup sizes.
Anatomy Plays a Big Role in Your Breast Size
Going along with the previous section, breasts don’t look the same across the board. Two people can have the same size breasts but look completely different from one another. That’s because your body’s anatomy determines how your breasts appear. Ideally, your breasts should be in proportion to your body – not too large and not too small – in order for them to look natural.
Your anatomy will play a role in how your implants appear, too. A lot of patients express a desire for more enhanced cleavage when they’re getting implants; this typically depends more on how your body is shaped than the size of your implants. Some patients have friends or family members who got a specific size implant that looks amazing and want to have the exact same one so they can have amazing results, too. Again, what works for someone else may not be the best option for you. Your body has its own unique structure and limits that will determine how your breasts will look after the surgery.
Hold Out For Your Post-Recovery Final Results
A lot of patients freak out after the first couple weeks of recovery because their breasts don’t look as good as they expected. While it is true that you can see results immediately after surgery, these are by no means your final results. Breast augmentation generates a lot of swelling and even bruising that sticks around for the initial recovery period, which can make your breasts look larger than your expected. The swelling and bruising will fade, however, and after a few weeks your breasts will heal enough that they look like they are supposed to. Some patients find it helpful to take a few pictures throughout the recovery period so they can see how far they’ve come. Just be kind to yourself and remember that your initial recovery results are not going to be the same as your final recovery results.
Above All, Remember…
Plastic surgeons can do amazing things to help you become the person you’ve always wanted to be. However, they are not magicians. They can’t just make you look like your favorite celebrity or give you the exact set of breasts you see on supermodels. However, if you choose a quality surgeon and are willing to be a little flexible, your breast augmentation will have great results and you will have a positive experience.
