When Will My Nipples Look Normal After a Breast Lift?

I am one week past my breast lift, and my nipples look like pieces of pepperoni slices sewn onto my breasts. When will they look normal again and look like a natural part of my breasts?

I understand why that description comes to mind. One week after a breast lift, the nipples and areolas can look very round, raised, tight, shiny, darker than expected, or sharply outlined. They may look like they are “sitting on top” of the breast instead of blending in naturally. At this stage, the appearance can look dramatic, but it is still far too early to judge the final result.

Why Nipples and Areolas Look Unusual After a Breast Lift

During a breast lift, the nipple and areola are repositioned, and the incision around the areola is still fresh. Swelling, skin tension, stitches, scabbing, and bruising can all make the area look more obvious at first. It is also common for one side to look different from the other early in recovery, with one nipple or areola appearing more swollen, raised, or uneven while the breasts continue to settle.

Breast Lift Nipple Healing Timeline

By about 4 to 6 weeks, swelling often starts to improve, and the areola may begin to blend better with the breast. Over the next 3 to 6 months, scars usually soften and flatten, while scar color and texture can continue changing for 6 to 12 months or longer.

Do not start scar creams, silicone, massage, or other scar treatments until your surgeon says it is safe. At one week after surgery, the best thing you can do is follow your post-operative instructions, keep your follow-up appointments, and give the area time to heal.

When to Call Your Plastic Surgeon

Some swelling, tightness, scabbing, unevenness, and a very noticeable areola can be normal early after a breast lift. However, you should call your plastic surgeon right away if you notice worsening redness, warmth, increasing pain, drainage, bleeding, an opening incision, fever, a strong odor, or dark or black skin changes. Those signs should be checked to make sure healing is on track.
