Approximately 25 million Americans suffer from venous disease, a condition which often results in varicose veins and other painful symptoms. VNUS Closure is a minimally-invasive, outpatient treatment for varicose veins and associated pain and swelling. While traditional treatments like vein stripping often involve significant discomfort and even pain, VNUS Closure is much gentler on the patient.
At Weniger Plastic Surgery of Bluffton, South Carolina, Dr. Fred Weniger performs the VNUS Closure procedure on an outpatient basis using local anesthesia. During the treatment a small puncture incision is made in the skin and a very small closure catheter is inserted through the incision and into the diseased vein. The catheter delivers radiofrequency energy which heats the surrounding collagen, thus closing the diseased vein and allowing the blood to naturally reroute to other healthy veins.

Patients generally experience a much milder recovery with VNUS Closure compared to other treatments like vein stripping and laser treatments. There is less post-operative pain, as well as less bruising and swelling. Patients are able to return to work much sooner, as soon as one day after the VNUS Closure procedure. There is also little to no scarring and a much lower complication rate. Nevertheless, the VNUS Closure procedure is very effective, with one study showing a 97.4% efficacy rate at one-year. VNUS Closure is often covered by insurance.
