Known as New-Fill in some countries, Sculptra® is an injectable dermal filler consisting of poly-L-lactic acid. European physicians have been administering Sculptra® under the name New-Fill since 1999, and in 2004 it was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for use in the United States. In addition to treating fine lines and wrinkles, Sculptra also helps with creating volume and facial contouring in the treatment of lipoatrophy.
Polylactic acid is Sculptra®’s main ingredient and it has been used in the surgical field for more than 20 years in products such as dissolvable stitches. The synthetic substance replicates a natural substance that occurs in the muscles during periods of exercise. Because Sculptra is a synthetic product, there’s no concern over allergic reactions.
Sculptra® is an injectable dermal filler that’s suitable for most everyone. A strategic pattern is followed as tiny needles inject the substance beneath the skin to combat fine lines, wrinkles and lipoatrophy of the facial area. Before the treatment begins, the administrating doctor applies a topical anesthetic cream to the skin to reduce discomfort. The length of time needed for a typical treatment is approximately 30 minutes. Once the polylactic acid is introduced under the skin it begins to promote new collagen growth which takes four to six weeks to produce the desired results of a fuller and more youthful-looking face.
Known throughout the cosmetic surgery industry as a liquid face lift, Sculptra®’s results can last for up to two years, resulting in thicker, more youthful skin and an improvement in facial volume. The side effects are similar to those of other injectables, including redness, inflammation and tenderness. Although patience is required when using this form of injectable cosmetic enhancement, the results tend to be longer-lasting and can lead to the restoration of natural fullness of the face in its youth.
