Kybella

Eliminate stubborn chin fat and achieve a more defined jawline with a non-surgical solution.

The Kybella® treatment, formerly known as ATX-101 and officially called deoxycholic acid, is a brand-new FDA-approved procedure designed to remove extra fat below the chin, commonly known as a “double chin”.

The body naturally produces deoxycholic acid, so Kybella® is simply an intensification of a routine process to melt away fat in this area. Because Kybella® is a powerful substance, only a properly licensed medical doctor should administer it, but done properly, patients can see extra chin fat rapidly reduced, restoring their natural profile.

Unlike Botox or other dermal fillers the Kybella® procedure is permanent. Once that extra chin fat has been melted away by Kybella®, it will not return. After undergoing a Kybella® procedure, you should expect to begin seeing positive results in as little as three or four weeks.

Candidates for Kybella®

Kybella® is only approved for patients in South Carolina and the surrounding area who have a moderate to severe amount of extra fat in and beneath their chins. Kybella® does not work on other parts of the face, and is not designed to help obese patients lose weight. Right now, the procedure is recommended for otherwise healthy adults who have no infections, swelling, or injuries to the chin area.

Kybella® is not recommended for people:

  • Who are pregnant or nursing
  • Who are under age 12
  • Who are heavy smokers
  • Who are taking blood clotting medication
  • Who have a blood clotting disorder
  • Who have recently undergone surgery under general anesthesia
  • Who have had surgery in the area of the chin or neck
  • Who are taking prescription medications that can interfere with Kybella®
  • Who have a rash, infection, or injury to the chin

Come into the office for a free consultation and find out if you are eligible for a Kybella® procedure.

Kybella® Procedure

The procedure consists of multiple injections of deoxycholic acid underneath the skin, directly into the fat tissues that you want to remove. Your doctor may make a dozen or more injections during the procedure to ensure that the Kybella® is evenly distributed in the fat tissue.

Usually, a second treatment will be scheduled a month after the first one. Most patients see substantial results after just two or three treatments, with some patients needing as many six to completely remove all extra chin fat.

Although the Kybella® procedure is administered by a surgeon, it is not necessary to go under full anesthesia or be admitted to a hospital operating room to receive Kybella® injections. The process is done on an outpatient office, and most patients are on their way home an hour or less after coming into the office for the Kybella® procedure.

Kybella® Recovery

Kybella® solely works on reducing the amount of fat in your chin, and so will not affect your skin at all. Most patients feel minimum discomfort after undergoing a Kybella® procedure, although there may be some residual numbness while the anesthesia wears off. Some patients experience mild discomfort in the form of tenderness or redness in the chin, but this normally dissipates in a day or two.

Administering Kybella® is a relatively painless procedure, lasting about 15-30 minutes. You’ll be able to go home the same day as you undergo the procedure, and be able to return to work or school the next day without any issues. Some patients prefer to schedule their Kybella® procedure for the afternoon just to be sure that they can return home to recover from the minor swelling and tenderness that can occur after a treatment.

There is a small risk of a “hardening” of the area after undergoing the Kybella® procedure, which can be reduced using massaging techniques to the affected area. The FDA has also warned that there is a small risk of some patients developing a nerve injury to the jaw which could affect facial muscles.

Kybella® Procedure FAQs

How Long Does a Kybella Treatment Procedure Last?

There is no downtime required following treatment. While there is a slight risk for minimal bruising at the injection site, patients are able to get back to their day immediately following their procedure.

What Can I Expect After a Procedure?

Following the procedure, it’s possible for you to develop redness and/or swelling. Those who do develop these side effects can expect them to subside within a couple of days. Otherwise, patients are able to get back to their daily activities following Kybella treatment.

Can I Undergo Kybella Treatment if Pregnant?

You should tell Dr. Weniger if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. As of yet, there have been no extensive studies as to the effects of Kybella on the unborn child, so caution should be taken. It’s best to avoid the treatment unless the resultant benefits would outweigh potential risks.

Is Anyone a Good Candidate to Receive Treatment?

Certain underlying conditions could pose risks during treatment. Before pursuing the procedure, tell your doctor if you:

  • Have or will be having surgery to your face, chin, or neck
  • Have or have in the past had medical conditions in the facial and neck areas
  • Are taking a medication that prevent blood clotting

How Many Treatments are Needed?

Each case is unique, and you’ll need to develop a plan with your doctor to determine how many sessions will yield optimal results. Sessions are typically spaced about a month apart, and up to six total treatments may be administered.
