The TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid) peel is considered a medium-depth peel that is suitable for many skin types. It can be used in various concentrations but is slightly deeper than AHA peels and thus produces more dramatic results. TCA peels can improve fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, superficial blemishes, pigment problems and acne scarring for an overall improvement in the skin texture and tone.
TCA peels work by removing or peeling the damaged layer of skin to reveal a “new” layer of skin that looks smoother, younger and more vibrant. The treatment takes about twenty minutes to complete and patients may feel a slight stinging or burning sensation during the peel process. Immediately after treatment, the skin may appear red, swollen or irritated. Patients should set aside several days for recovery as the skin will peel within a few days of treatment and continue to peel for four to seven days afterward. Sun exposure will need to be avoided for a period of time after treatment. Once healing is complete, patients will enjoy smoother, more youthful and radiant looking skin. For some patients more than one treatment may be needed and these are generally scheduled two to three months apart.
