What does “Board-Certified” mean?
An Informative Article by Frederick G. Weniger, MD

Patients are often confused and dismayed by the terminology they see in advertisements. In fact, many patients will argue that their doctor is a board certified plastic surgeon, when that is not the case. Furthermore, I have seen patients who are very angry AFTER surgery, when they learned that their doctor was not what he said. The American Board of Plastic Surgery is the board recognized by the only American Board of Medical Specialties to certify plastic surgeons as diplomates of the board. There is NO OTHER BOARD which can certify plastic surgeons. In contrast, there are MANY “boards” that “certify” specialists in things like cosmetic surgery or cosmetic medicine. Be sure that the American Board of Medical Specialties does NOT recognize these boards. In real life, these “board certifications” serve to confuse consumers with a cloud of smoke, mirrors, and awkward terminology.

At Weniger Plastic Surgery, we want the best for our patients. Of course we would like anyone considering plastic surgery to visit our office, but more importantly, we urge anyone considering a procedure to CHOOSE A BOARD-CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON, even if it is not Dr. Weniger. Be sure to look that your surgeon is a member of the American Board of PLASTIC Surgeons, or look for the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) logo.

Remember, at Weniger Plastic Surgery, we do not remove teeth. We do not treat high blood pressure. We do not do colonoscopies or deliver babies either. We do plastic surgery. That’s all we do here.

We believe that patients deserve SPECIALISTS for each specialty. Choose a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon for your plastic surgery and cosmetic needs.
