Facials are special skin treatments designed to cleanse, exfoliate and nourish the skin. They are typically performed by a licensed aesthetician. The facial can help to clear up impurities and hydrate the skin for a healthy, radiant look.
The typical facial begins by cleansing the skin. A product is chosen which is appropriate for the individual’s skin type – normal, dry, oily, combination skin, mature or sensitive – and this may be applied using cotton pads or sponges. Next, the aesthetician analyzes the skin using a brightly lit magnifying lamp that can help to unveil any skin concerns. During this step, your eyes will be covered to protect against the light. Exfoliation of the skin is performed with either mechanical or chemical techniques. With mechanical exfoliation, a gritty texture and often steam vapor are used to slough off damaged layers of skin. In some cases, a chemical peel may be used instead. Once the extraction is complete, the aesthetician may perform a facial massage to help stimulate the skin and facial muscles. This is then followed by the application of a facial mask which is chosen to address the individual’s specific skin type and any skin concerns. While the mask is in place, the aesthetician may perform a scalp massage or other service. The facial is then completed with the application of toners and protective creams.
There are many variations on the traditional facial. Facials which focus on extraction may be referred to as deep-cleansing or deep pore-cleansing facials. Sometimes the extraction process may be left out for a mini facial. Other facials may be targeted to specific skin concerns such as anti-aging facials and acne facials. Routine monthly facials can help you to maintain beautiful, healthy skin.
